This lecture was a touch hard to follow, but I learned that you have to be aware of how you make art, and how you manipulate images, because it can affect the meaning, and the quality. He also talked about how the government will cover paintings and other objects to make a setting seem more formal, or to hide a specific fact for fear that it may corrupt the meaning behind the speech or event that is going on. I also learned to not tell students what a work is about, but to try and let them figure it out for themselves.
The role of art in visual culture is to aid in education, and monument events. As an art educator, we use these works to explain the culture, and discuss the importance behind how it was made, and why it was made. It is also to question ways of thinking, and we use it to show how the setting, culture and atmosphere can change the meaning or how a work is interpreted.
Students learn the basics on how to create, but don't necessarily learn why they are learning these techniques, such as perspective. This is something that needs to change, so students are inspired to learn on their own, and understand why they are being taught the lessons. They should also learn to think creatively, and not just create from what they are conditioned to see.
